Big Ideas from a Small World

“Harsh” is a good amount of anger to start with.

Copy that sells.

Posted in Method to the Madness by Ryan Thomas on March 31, 2009

I’m gonna show you a spot, but I want you to really listen – every second of this spot is filled with selling language. Sure it uses sex, but we’re grown ups and the sex plus fast food metaphor works – it’s about indulgence.

Did you listen closely to the copy?

  • Foodie Culture
  • Travel
  • Expertise
  • Flavour Combinations
  • Sex
  • Youth
  • Indulgence
  • Doing Something Wrong
  • Soft Feminist Comedy

The next time you see a brief with 9 objectives and say “There is no way we’re fitting all that in,” think of this spot. Only great copywriting can hit that many buttons that fast.

I will buy your wonderful sandwich Hardee’s, I just don’t know if I’m going to eat it or have sex with it.

What Are We Gonna Do With All This Free Publicity?

Pharrell vs. McDonald’s:

Meanwhile: The ShamWow pitch man Vince Shlomi was arrested for… well I Googled “shamwow hooker punch” to find the story.

Like the cycle of life, one pitch man is born as another dies. All the ShamWows in the world can’t soak up that much irony.

Canada’s Cadbury Egg Close to Doom!

I’ve blogged about the campaign before, but the egg is near doom day.

The Impossible Pitch! I’ve seen the impossible pitch it’s for a horse grooming salon.

Stockholm – Three interns pitch Adidas world wide in hopes of winning the account for their agency Volontaire. Why?

Because according to Adidas – Impossible is Nothing.

I just want the record to state that a copy writer at 180/TBWA wrote that line.

Now on with the show:

Super Punch is looking for a new logo.

Don’t say I never threw you a freebie.

More on Suzanne Pope!

Posted in From Canada, Go Read A Book by Ryan Thomas on March 30, 2009

Seems she did a course on writing for the ICA.

Here’s hoping she’ll teach it again:

But whatever you decide, I hope you will decide to write. Because we as writers have a problem. And for us, the only way out is the way through.

Great Writing 101 – From John St.’s Suzanne Pope

Posted in From Canada, Go Read A Book by Ryan Thomas on March 30, 2009

I think this article is relevant, regardless of where you stand in the industry. We live in an age of visual overload and the dial is swinging back towards well crafted words.

If you don’t believe that words will captivate your target’s attention – look at Twitter.

Suzanne has an amazing piece on Ihaveanidea about the value of great craft in copy, complete with examples out the wazoo. (this line is not one of them) But her words are not just for juniors, I have seen CD’s take a writer’s book and fixate on elements of layout.

In all honesty everyone should read this short piece.

It reminds me of a story about a writer who got a job at an agency that was looking for an “in your face” male writer.

He faxed them a sheet of paper that said: “Hire me or I’ll kick your ass.”

It included a phone number.

Another job lost to a robot.

One of the major problems I have found with a lot of social media is the need to sift though garbage to find the gems.

Here is a great little app for tracking what’s hot and how big a video is getting. Anthony Kalamut likens it to the old school chum top 40. Me personally, I’m waiting till the Mac Talk version of Casey Casum is hosting them.

Writers & Artists raise a glass: Today is the anniversary of the pencil eraser!

Posted in Get High Fives by Ryan Thomas on March 30, 2009

A big thanks to the Smithsonian, who have found digital content to reward history buffs with.

Now write or draw or stick it up your nose. Today is all about the eraser.
