The Dark Side of Branding

Posted in Method to the Madness by Ryan Thomas on March 2, 2009

Ok so millions of great minds have talked about social media space – and the way your brand can become a part of it.

We know it starts with strong branding, is built upon great communications and a willingness to let your consumers ‘play’ with the brand.

But what is a multi-billion dollar multinational to do when things take a turn for the worse.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

The McGangbang

It’s a sandwich made from a double cheeseburger and a McChicken sandwich — where you put an entire McChicken sandwich inside a double cheeseburger.

And its catching on like wildfire. It’s been posted on the new ultra popular “This is why your fat” and has spawned first time video’s on youtube, consumers are asking for it in store by name and Eat Me Daily has informed McDonald’s of this new sandwich trend and is waiting for a response.

Welcome to the dark side of Mc-naming-nomenclature.

Adriana Oyarce has just e-mailed me the perfect PR solution to this problem – The McTurducken. The Perfect way to turn a negative into a positive and meet the needs of your passionate web savvy consumers should this thing keep gaining momentum.

    I’m speechless.
    Kind of.
I believe and at the same time can’t believe how fast things like this catch on.

Looks like White Castle might have already benefited (term used lightly..) from, shall we call it product-personalizing, a few years back.
“This year, they’re raising the bar with deep-fried White Castle sliders. Called “Baseball’s Best Sliders,” they’ll come two for $4. A side of cheese sauce is $1 extra.”

Wonder if this will get new life and catch on now that This Is Why You’re Fat has got it posted.
    Deep fried White Castle cheeseburgers.

And look – you can even make them at home if White Castle won’t do it for you!

    oh my.

I think showing people how to make these at home is like teaching someone how to make a pipe bomb. It’s covered by free speech but its morally gray.
