Big Ideas from a Small World

HBC’s new logo.

Posted in Change Something, From Canada by Ryan Thomas on March 9, 2009

That’s the Hudson Bay Company for those not from Canada and the Arcade Agency has just given them a logo redesign:

Beyond the fact that this retailer used to own great swaths of the Canadian wilderness, I have always been fascinated by the HBC’s point blanket. It’s something so intrinsically Canadian it’s nice to see its colours and layout incorporated into the new logo.

That's alot of land.

That's a lot of land.

The point blanket was traded for furs with local native populations. Yet since native populations used the bolts of blankets for every imaginable need, huge bolts were sold with each colour band evenly spaced and representing the value of one pelt or fur.

Hence the term “point” blanket. One colour, one point, one fur. It’s a remarkable story and the HBC had a pretty amazing relationship with the native population. I’m glad to see it has been featured even slightly in this new logo.
