Big Ideas from a Small World

Just the kind of thing you’ll never see in a junior’s portfolio.

Posted in Blue States by Ryan Thomas on March 21, 2009

There has got to be a better way than the old school portfolio review. Sure a few ambient pieces slip in here or there, but this new stunt from DraftFCB is exactly the kind of thing that CD’s would pass over on paper.

It’s cute it’s different and I’m sure at least a few camera phone pics where snapped by no agency staff.

Some other ideas that would get a junior laughed out of the building:

1) New Shreddies

2) Campaign for Real Beauty

3) Cadbury’s Gorilla

4) Almost anything done for Halo

I’m not saying that these can’t be done on paper but many of these ideas in a portfolio review would have been glossed over. Many a time.

One of these days I’ll patent a better student book process.

There’s so much truth to this post it almost hurts to see it.
Here the prospective all are gathered in a huddle to create work that people may have told them time and time again is the only thing important to go into your book, but in the meantime, they are not able to truly demonstrate the full extent of their thought processes and ideas… nay, their talent. The worst thing to hear is when someone asks you whether you believe you are capable of thinking in a certain way, and you reply that you are; then they retort “Why is it not in your book?”
