Speaking of Selfpromotion: Seth MacFarlane for Hulu

Posted in From Canada, Method to the Madness by Ryan Thomas on March 25, 2009

You know, it’s funny – this spot is almost matching luggage to the Superbowl Hulu spot, but somehow it feels more about the star than the brand.

Alec Baldwin’s rendition is less about 30 Rock and it’s a longer spot:

Seth is a perfect fit for Hulu, his inclusion is obvious. It’s just a shame he didn’t get into the roll of Alien as much as he did Stewie or Peter.

(In other news, I’m not allowed to watch Hulu because I live in Canada. In the wild white North we have to steal our tv the way god intended.)

I love these spots! Those guys n gals over at the CP+B camp are sick sick masterminds. What a 180 from anything you would of expected, I also get how the MacFarlane spot is more focused on the star where as the Baldwin spot had him more as a character and didn’t focus on the show. I think people see Baldwin and automatically recognize him because he’s always on screen. Whereas Seth is NEVER on screen and while he has a recognizable voice it drew a much stronger connection between him and the product. Possibly? I dunno.

Considering that most of Seth’s core demos are of the digital age and the most likely to piratebay his shows, his inclusion makes perfect sense – it also might be one of the reasons his shows are featured so predominantly in the spots.

My only issue is that with so much focus on Seth’s products is the Hulu brand really shining in this execution?

And seriously. Hulu needs to be assessable in Canada, 90% of the brands advertising on it are available here. We share a boarder after all.

Between all the bureaucracy with the CRTC and Canadian copyright laws it’s too much of a mess to figure it all out.

Or you could just download http://hotspotshield.com/

I don’t love the pop ups that come along with Hotspot but yes now I can in fact watch Hulu thanks Adam!

Tragically though I can’t see the commercials!
