When jokes come back to haunt you! Harry Rosen Updated

Posted in From Canada, Make Friends by Ryan Thomas on April 22, 2009

I just got a comment on an older post about Harry Rosen’s new project and I thought it bared repeating:

Mr. Guenette does appear on behalf of Taxi, and we were delighted to have him. However, the blog and advertising for Harry’s New Confidence were the brainchild of Dave Hamilton and Bob Goulart who consult with Harry one the marketing front.

That said,  two more of Harry’s Confidence Interviews are up now.  Robert Deluce of Porter Air and Roger Martin of the Rotman School.

The positive tone of these men is nice for a change, you wouldn’t believe how much bad news I go through a day sifting for blog posts.

Taxi and Harry Rosen present: The New Confidence Blog

Posted in From Canada, Make Friends by Ryan Thomas on March 25, 2009

Harry Rosen is for leaders – men with suits that shake the world, and like any good leader there is a little bit of shameless self promotion in the mix.

The New Confidence blog for Rosen contains upcoming talks with The Guru, The Visionary and The Entrepreneur, but up first is an intimate look at The Influencer.

The Influencer in question? None other then Taxi’s own Rob Guenette.

The feel and strategy on these spots is perfect. It’s a little like attending a speech at the Kellogg school of Management or paying to hear Richard Branson speak. It does everything it’s supposed to for the Harry Rosen brand – which is why I can’t stop chuckling about the little and very unusual Taxi self promo.

I gotta admit though – in these tough financial times there is nothing like taking your boss on a photo shoot and dressing him up to ensure your own employment.

Bring Copy To Life – Taxi & Koodo Mobile

Posted in From Canada by Ryan Thomas on March 20, 2009

New work from Taxi (again) this time it’s for client Koodo. It’s a fun little spot and wild departure from the 80’s workout vibe the campaign was launched on.

I wonder if it was the client brief or Taxi that clearly stated that all communications would contain references to media and culture just older than the target demo.

I really hope that is the case, because as they creep through the 80’s things can only get weirder.

Sticky Advertising From Taxi and Telus

Posted in From Canada, Method to the Madness by Ryan Thomas on March 19, 2009

Sometimes it can be fun to just do something surprising. Taxi is bringing back the fridge magnet for telecom client Telus. I almost wish I was in Alberta, but judging by the snow I’ll pass.

No cute magnet is worth snow.

Via Marketing Magazine:

The telecom has invaded 18 high-traffic transit shelters with magnet geckos, the latest Telus critter, to promote its Future Friendly Home bundle, which is only available in B.C. and Alberta.

Passersby can grab a gecko magnet, which in B.C. directs them to, and in Alberta, and reads: “Bundle and save on the sure-footed network. You’ll be gripped.”

In case you’re not from Canada, Telus picks a new animal every advertising season, and makes cute ads on a white background anchored with the tag line:

The Future Is Friendly.

In partnership with Taxi, Telus has created a very strong brand position – when you see a white field and cute animal in Canadian advertising you know it’s Telus.

Telus: Red vs. Blue (2006) Taxi

Telus: Hair Cut  (2007) Taxi

Telus: Toy Story (2008) Taxi

This campaign was so popular that for a while in Canada 3 out of 4 Telecoms companies all had animal pitch pets; Fido with dogs, Bell with beavers. The trade off is that the Telus concept has always been open enough to allow for adaptation.

I’m not sad that that beavers are gone.

Taxi has just created a fun little site to promote this year’s BESSIES AWARDS. On the surface it seems like a pretty simple little site, but the depth of the sound clips is comedy gold.

You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you did not mouse over Nancy Vonk a few times.

I got a copy of the 2008 BESSIES reel from a swag bag at the CASSIES and I’m embarrassed to say I still haven’t watched it. I’m doing it right now. I promise.

I’m not saying you haven’t seen the BESSIES 2008 either, but if maybe you wanted to refresh before this year’s amazing reel. You could click here.

All You Need Is Cheese – Cheeseman

Posted in From Canada, Make Friends by Ryan Thomas on March 11, 2009

If you’re reading this please remind me: I have to carve a tiny cheese man for the love of my life’s birthday (seventh day, seventh month).

I know it seems weird at first, but she’s French Canadian and about 40% of her diet is dairy and sugar…

All You Need Is Cheese is done by Canada’s own Taxi. The work they have done for this campaign has already been pretty insane – sweetly insane, but insane none the less.
